FRED LUCAS was born in Tacoma, Washington, and at age nine was placed under the tutorship of a skilled fine arts artist for five years. He obtained additional training at the Famous Artist Schools of Westport, Connecticut. While living in Las Vegas, Nevada, and later, the Rio Grande Valley of New Mexico, Fred continued his study and exposure to the works of master painters, western life and literature. This influenced him to enter a full-time fine arts career, and he began gallery exhibition at Santa Fe and Scottsdale in 1972. Fred Lucas continues to paint and enjoy the grandeur of the West and its people in his studio in Arizona. "For over a century, the great American West, with its unique heritage, has been artistically rendered. These past and present creations reflect the vigor, romance, and beauty of western life. Such art will remain cherished and significant because it sparks a meaningful and valued communication. It helps us gaze at the strength, courage, and freedom of western man in his majestic domain. Western heroic characters and panoramic vistas grasp the attention and enrich the senses of appreciation. The yearning in a true artist of the West is to catch the spirit of robust people, the land and their lives. His calling is to originate illuminating and artistic expressions reflecting these values.
